It was cold, it was cloudy, it spitted rain…but to car enthusiasts from
across the province and beyond it didn’t matter. People flocked to 4
Wing for the main event of the Dream Wheels Weekend, Race the Base.
Exotic car owners had the opportunity to test the limits of their
machines in a safe, secure and legal environment by racing the runways
usually reserved for the machines of the Air Force. |

As I drove along base road to the A&W
parking lot, I knew immediately that Master Corporal Downey’s Bike Night
was a huge success. How? There was nowhere to park. Once I had squared
away my vehicle, I ambled off to look at the much more fabulous bikes
and cars that were assembled. |

4 Wing’s Wing General Safety Officer (WGSO), Mr. Cal Gerber, retired
this July after 48 years of service to Canada in both the Canadian
Forces (CF) and Public Service. This milestone has been acknowledged
throughout the Department of National Defense (DND) General Safety
community as accolades are forwarded from across the country. Cal
completed his career in the CF as a Logistics/Supply officer and jumped
at the opportunity to take on the role as the Cold Lake General Safety
Officer. Cal was the WGSO (then Base GSO) for 21 years, stepping up to
the plate when the DND General Safety Program had been in place for less
than twenty years, to some extent still in its infancy. |

4 Wing St. Mark’s Protestant Chapel ran its second annual Vacation Bible
School this year from August 23 to 27. There were 31 kids who took part
with ten volunteers keeping the activities and kids on track. The
morning sessions included: music, games, scripture readings, and crafts.
It was a huge hit with the kids, who had St. Mark’s pumping with
enthusiasm and positive energy. |
